Structural Engineering for Lap Pools

Structural engineering for long, narrow lap pools, including detailing for their extended length.

Long lap pool with lane markers

In shortA lap pool's length is its structural challenge: over a long, narrow shell, joint design, shrinkage and soil variation along the run matter far more than they would in a compact pool.

Length is the defining structural feature

A lap pool is not a normal pool stretched out. Concrete shrinks as it cures and moves with temperature, and both effects accumulate over length. In a compact shell that movement is small enough to absorb. Over a twenty or twenty-five metre run it is not, and if it is not given somewhere to go it appears as cracking.

Joint design

The answer is joints — construction joints where pours meet and movement joints where the structure needs to accommodate length change — positioned deliberately rather than wherever a pour happened to stop. Each joint is a potential leak path, so the detailing has to keep the shell watertight while still allowing the movement it was put there to permit.

Soil variation along the run

A long pool crosses more ground than a compact one, and ground is rarely uniform. A lap pool can start in firm material and finish in fill, or cross a service trench or an old excavation. Founding a rigid shell across changing material invites differential settlement, which over that length shows up as cracking or a visibly out-of-level waterline. Where conditions vary, the footing design responds to the worst case along the run.

Constrained side setbacks

Lap pools are usually placed down the side of a property, which puts them close to a boundary and often close to the house on the other side. That makes excavation support and setback compliance part of the design — see building a pool near a boundary.

What you receive

Structural drawings covering shell geometry and reinforcement over the full length, joint types and positions, footing design responding to ground conditions along the run, plus calculations and documentation for approval.

FAQs

Lap Pools questions

Do lap pools crack more than other pools?

They are more exposed to the causes. Shrinkage and thermal movement accumulate with length, and a long pool crosses more variation in ground conditions. Both are manageable through joint design and foundation design, but both need to be addressed deliberately.

How long can a lap pool be before it needs movement joints?

There is no single figure — it depends on the shell, the reinforcement, the exposure and the ground. Joint spacing is determined as part of the design rather than taken from a rule of thumb.

Can a lap pool run along the boundary fence?

Often, subject to setback rules and to whether the excavation would undermine the fence or a neighbouring footing. Both the approval setback and the excavation support are assessed as part of the engineering.
