Core service
Structural design, calculations, drawings and reports for swimming pool projects — delivered by registered structural engineers.
Pool structural engineering is the process of designing and documenting the structural elements of a swimming pool — the shell, any retaining structures, and the interaction between the pool and the surrounding site — so that the pool is structurally sound and the project can be submitted for council or building approval. It is distinct from the architectural or aesthetic design of the pool, which is typically handled by a pool builder or designer.
A pool is a large excavated structure, often near boundaries, buildings or sloping ground, holding a significant volume of water. Getting the structural design wrong can lead to cracking, movement, or failure of the pool shell or surrounding retaining. Structural engineering assesses site conditions and loads and designs the structure to suit them.
The engineering package typically includes structural design of the pool shell and any retaining, structural calculations supporting that design, engineering drawings suitable for construction and council submission, and an engineering report summarising the assessment. See our dedicated engineering plans page for how these deliverables differ from architectural plans.
Concrete (including shotcrete/gunite) pools are structurally engineered as reinforced concrete structures, with reinforcement, thickness and detailing designed to suit the site and loading.
Fibreglass pools still require structural and site engineering — particularly around excavation, backfill, groundwater and site-specific installation conditions, even though the shell itself is prefabricated.
Where a pool sits on a sloping site, near a boundary, or requires retaining, additional structural engineering is required for the retaining structure and its interaction with the pool. See our retaining wall engineering service and boundary guide for more detail.
Pools built close to an existing house or structure need engineering that accounts for the interaction between the two — including excavation support and any impact on existing foundations.
We also assess existing pools and engineer alterations or renovations. See our pool inspection and assessment service.

A structural engineer reviews your project information.
Design developed for the pool and any retaining.
Calculations prepared to support the design.
Construction-ready drawings and documentation.
Complete engineering package issued.
Concrete pool structural designs are prepared in accordance with AS 2783 (Concrete Swimming
Pools) and AS 3600 (Concrete Structures) — the standards governing the design of concrete
swimming pool shells and reinforced concrete structures in Australia. Reference to a standard means the design
methodology follows it; it doesn’t itself guarantee a specific council or certifier outcome, which
depends on your project and jurisdiction.
FAQs
Yes — construction-ready structural drawings are a standard part of our engineering package.
Yes, structural calculations supporting the design are included and available for council submission where required.
Yes, alongside concrete and other fixed pool structures.
Yes — this is one of the more common project types we handle.
Yes — concrete pool structural designs are prepared in accordance with AS 2783 and AS 3600. See our note above for what that does and doesn’t cover.
